Short Film: Backstroke (2019) Review

Directed: by Robbie Barclay
Starring: Josefine Christoffersen, Shemar Jonas, and Tom Frank
Run Time: 10 Minutes

Synopsis

A couple run off in a stolen car. The girl keeps getting calls from her mother. She wants to see the ocean, and he “pretty much” knows where they’re going. They find a pistol in the glove compartment. He shows her how to shoot it.

She points the gun at him and tells him to get on his knees. He doesn’t like it, but he plays along. She makes him count to ten as she runs down the path. He chases her, and she stops at the lake. She drops the gun and her clothes and gets in the lake.

Amber’s boyfriend doesn’t catch up, but some other guy is standing there. They talk, and she’s a little creeped out since she’s naked in the water and he’s following her. Where is her boyfriend Jake?

The guy waits, and he’s a real creep. He says the boyfriend is dead. She swims away and suddenly notices the man is gone. She gets out and gets dressed, still screaming for Jake. She gets back to her car, drives off, and then gets a call from Jake.

Commentary

I liked it. It had a beginning, middle, and end. It had a story and characters. Things happened. Far too many shorts think it’s OK to skip these things, but this one had it all. Add in some great location shooting and a creepy situation, and you’ve got a winner.
