Short Film: Trap (2021) Review

Synopsis

We get a very brief introduction by the director in a creepy “horror host” style, but then we quickly get into the story.

A young woman is alone in her apartment and hears a noise in the closet. She approaches the closet when her phone rings— it’s her date for the evening. She goes out, has a good time, and returns. Then she finds footprints going into her closet. Should she open the door? No! Does she?

Commentary

This is about as low-budget as an indie film can get and still be good. And it is good!

There are some makeup effects, but clearly there was no real budget for CGI or any kind of special effects. And yet, it’s creepy, suspenseful, and looks good. The lighting is dim, but that’s not inappropriate for a small apartment. The sound is perfect, you can hear everything clearly. The plot fits the run time perfectly, it’s not dragged out, nor is it rushed, but there’s still plenty of time for a surprise or two.

When she reached for the door handle, I literally said out loud, “Don’t do that!” Spoiler: She did.
