The Fisherman by John Langan (2016)

There’s a spoiler right from the beginning of The Fisherman. Abe, the everyman hero of the story, makes it through to the end. He’s telling us the story that already happened. And that’s good right? He survives. Well, maybe not necessarily when you find out how much grief, loss, shock, and bone-deep horror one man can go through.

Once Abe hooked me with his tale, I was pulled along as inexorably as a catfish on a line. I could see some things coming, and I wanted to tell the characters to stop. Don’t do that. Don’t go there. But the events already happened, I reminded myself, and all I could do was let them replay. And when you think you’ve seen the worst, author John Langan heaps on another shovelful of slime to make you squirm in your chair.

Two thumbs up from this reader. I highly recommend you grab a copy of The Fisherman and give it a read. Alone at night, next to a bubbling creek, with the only light coming from your flashlight. What was that splashing noise? Probably nothing. Keep reading. I dare you.
