2026 Dead Howling

Spoiler-Free Judgment Zone

We quickly move into 6 months after a zombie apocalypse has wiped out most of humanity. A werewolf teams up with a few survivors trying to get to a safe zone. The result is not a typical werewolf or zombie movie, but an interesting mash up. We both thought it could have used more werewolf. The acting and production values are excellent. Our only fault is a story that moves great at times and drags a bit at others. The pacing is uneven. Overall, we’d call it a win though, and a pretty entertaining movie.

Spoilery Synopsis

We’re told about a highly contagious virus that makes people highly violent. Yeah, it’s a zombie apocalypse that plays out as the credits roll.

Six months later in Western Australia, Uncle Tony drives the family to the next town, but they’re low on gas.

Somewhere else, Carter wakes up and has run out of food. He spots a car that’s surrounded by zombies. Inside the car, Tony tells Megan and Billy that hell hold off the zombies while they run for it. Uncle Tony becomes zombie food.

In order to save the kids, Carter injects himself with something and then turns into a werewolf. Later, Carter explains that the monster saved them, and that it’s gone now. Billy explains to Megan that Carter was the werewolf all along.

Carter goes out to find them all some food and gets attacked. He kills a zombie with a can of baked beans. More show up, and he wolfs out.

Later, he explains himself to the kids. Before the virus, he worked in animal research (the good kind). He was working on a drug to help old dogs, and an AI gave him ideas for some improvements. It worked, but the dogs turned violent. He changed the formula, and then the plague hit. He injected himself with the drug to boost his immune system, but it had a whole different effect on him– it turned him into a wolfman. And it also made him immune to the zombie virus.

Megan explains that they were heading to a sanctuary down south they heard about on the radio. Carter says that was made-up and doesn’t exist. Except they tune in and he hears the broadcast as well.

Billy and Megan decide to go off on their own, and they soon need rescuing. Since Carter followed them, that’s fine. They all stop for a lesson in killing zombies. Soon, they’ve both killed a zombie.

On the road, they run into Sandra, another person heading toward the sanctuary, and she goes with them. She’s soon bitten, so that doesn’t last long. Rather than kill her, they just leave her behind.

Carter thinks the zombies are evolving and getting smarter. They eventually arrive at a checkpoint where a guy calling himself Corporal Reynolds says they’ve reached a safe zone. Naturally, it’s a trap, and Reynolds and Major Butler use the whole thing to steal supplies; this is no sanctuary.

The baddies tie up Billy and Carter and start to have some fun with Megan. Before things go far, Carter wolfs up and eats Butler. Reynolds quickly follows.

There are plenty of supplies, they can just stay here. No, they made a promise to Uncle Tony to find the sanctuary.

They head into Perth, a major city, and fires are still burning there. And walk to what they think to be the source of the broadcast on the outskirts. “The Sanctuary” appears dark and deserted. A hologram appears and tells them the sanctuary is a failure and they left the broadcast running to create hope.

Megan takes it badly, but Carter says the best part is the family they made along the way. Suddenly, zombies attack! They barricade the doors, but that’s not going to last long. There are too many for Carterwolf to take them all out, but there’s one option.

Carter wolfs up and lets the zombies inside while the kids try to sneak out. Megan gets bitten and Carter gets all torn up. Carter uses his special “red injection” on Megan, who turns into a werewolf. Carter dies.

But then we see that Megan, and Billy, are fine, getting into a car and driving away.

Brian’s Commentary

Boba Fett’s Uncle Tony got one scene and top billing, so don’t watch it just to see him.

Zombies versus werewolves is a fun idea, but there’s not enough werewolf action. The wolf effects aren’t great, which is why we don’t get much of it.

It’s got a lot of action, is well acted, and was pretty entertaining. Overall, I liked this one.

Kevin’s Commentary

I thought it was pretty good overall. An interesting idea to mix it up adding a werewolf into a zombie apocalypse. The acting, effects, and story were all very good. The only real fault I have is the pacing that was uneven. Sometimes it’s exhilarating and sometimes it drags. Okay, it could have used more werewolf action too. But that made sense since Carter did have a limited amount of serum injectables.
