HorrorTales.666 Part 2 (2021)

Synopsis

Note that this is a long-delayed follow-up to the first movie, that came out in 2003. I don’t know if anyone ever watched that film, but it’s currently a bit hard to find, and from what I could see of the reviews and still photos, that’s probably fine. Anyway, both films are anthologies, so you don’t need to have seen the original.

Starting out with opening credits music that is hard and fast enough to clear out your sinuses, this movie never lets up.

The Voice reads an opening narrative about “the burglar” who once again is breaking into homes and regretting it – in for a rude awakening from the very bowels of HELL.

Casing the neighborhood in broad daylight, an interesting choice, he watches as a resident across the street leaves. He quickly breaks in through their front door. After an intense and angry soliloquy, he looks for something worth taking. He encounters witchery in the kitchen and the stories begin to unfold…

Open House

Years after her parents were murdered by a masked killer, Sue is trying to succeed as a Realtor despite a comically egotistical boss and conniving coworkers. Can she overcome her demon from the past without it crossing over into the present?

The Last Farewell of Mr. Perez

A voice narrating from the afterlife details Mr. Perez’s last day on Earth quickly morphs into a science fiction tale of an alien, who was one of chaperones of humanity, acting as his long-dead mother. It’s strange, unexpected, and surprisingly poignant.

Slay Ride

A Christmas story of peace and happiness, right? Not quite, as Santa Junior is taking over the job this year for the big guy. He’s jolly until he finds out what Mrs. Claus Junior is up to with one of the elves. The most darkly funny of the tales. Oh, so very horribly funny.

The Present

The wraparound asks, “Who knows what goes on in this hotbed of suburban lust and depravity?” Well, this story shows us in detail. It’s just an ordinary evening in an ordinary home until it’s not. Oh boy, it is not. Husband comes home after work to a wife making dinner, they have a little wine. And she surprises him with a little gift… Holy crap, that one did not go where I was expecting it to go even when I thought I saw where it was going.

My Life

The movie swallows its own tail as Phil Herman, one of the writers, and producer Dustin Hubbard play themselves struggling with the quirky personalities and egos of show business as they try to put together the movie Horrortales.666 Part 2. It derails from horror, but it’s still pretty funny. Though it goes on a bit too long.

Commentary

Kevin’s Comments: Joel D. Wynkoop owns the wraparound story as the burglar – angry, trapped, unable to escape the destiny that’s been forced onto him.

Overlook the “indie” vibe of the movie – relax and let yourself be entertained. The stories are well written and engaging. The acting is decent. The pacing is good. The special effects get the job done. It’s got gore and cringe and humor and the unexpected. All in all, Kevin gives it a strong thumbs up. Brian said if they think is a B-movie they are using the wrong alphabet.

We don’t have to wait another 18 years for part 3 – it’s due out in 2022.

Brian’s Comments: I got five minutes into this and handed the laptop to Kevin—I “noped” right out after the credits music made my eyes hurt. Once I was freed from writing a review, I decided to sit through the damned thing and throw popcorn at the screen, and before it was done, I said, “That wasn’t so bad after all.” I did read some other reviews that were pretty harsh on the final segment, but I think I enjoyed that one the most, maybe after “Slay Ride,” but I will admit it went on for two or three phone calls too much. I can honestly say that this wasn’t the worst film I’ve seen this month.
