Like the second movie, you’ll get much more from this sequel if you see the previous movies first. They build on each other, and in fact this one picks up with an opening scene that continues where Saw 2 ends.
Leigh Whannell continues as writer, Darren Lynn Bousman directs again, and it shows. It’s the first two movies only more so. This time, the master of the games – Jigsaw – involves himself as part of the puzzle, adding another layer to the complexity of what’s actually going on. And when you think you have that figured out, there’s another layer. Wow.
The special effects are top-notch. Gross, gory, and cringe-worthy. I thought the characters were a step up from the second film, and I was back to being more interested in them and caring about their fate. All-in-all, I enjoyed this one as much as the first, more than the second. You should definitely check this out.
