Shutter

This is a straightforward ghost story about a murdered girl who gets revenge. The mystery here is who killed her and why they did it.

The action revolves around a couple of newlyweds who move to Japan. Ben has lived and worked there before, but Jane is new and doesn’t speak the language. After driving down a dark country road and hitting a lonely Japanese woman in their car late one night, the two start seeing “spirit images” or blurry spots in their photos. Since Ben is a professional photographer, this can’t be ignored.

The spirit phots get more serious, and real-world encounters start getting scarier and scarier. Something has to give, and the two go to see a local medium who simply says “She will always be with you.” The ghost seems to be especially attached to Jane, but is it to hurt her, or is it to warn her? Someone killed Migumi. Was it Jane driving her car that night? Was it Ben? Could it be his friends?

This movie has the distinction of being remade four times. Thailand (2004), India (2007), America (2008), and Hindi (2010). It’s got straightforward ghost-creepiness, but little to no gore or blood.
